The Nigerian Institute of Architects says it plans to celebrate excellence in the profession and create an environment for the growth of qualitative and sustainable design with its annual West Africa Architecture Festival.

According to the President of the NIA, Mr. Tonye Braide, the event which is in its second edition,  will be held in Port Harcourt in October, and will attract architects and designs from the Diaspora.

He said, “This year, the West Africa Architecture Festival with the theme, ‘Celebrating Diapora excellence: The leap into new civilisation’, is aimed at bringing all architects in Nigeria and in the Diaspora together to celebrate excellence in architecture. The epic annual festival, which is in its 2nd edition, will be held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State between 24th and 27th October, 2017.

“What WAAFEST is trying to achieve is to further create a point of convergence among architects in Nigeria, those in the Diaspora especially in the West African region, and Nigeria especially Rivers State; Port Harcourt was chosen as a suitable point of investment that will further grow the city.”

He said about 200,000 to 250,000 visitors, 100 exhibitors and 34 participating countries would gather in the city to celebrate architecture in West Africa and Africa at large.

The Chairman of the NIA, Rivers State chapter, Andrew Egbuonu, said the festival was designed not just for architects, but for allied professionals and the general public with a target to educate and improve the lifestyle of the people.

He said the second edition would include activities such as food fiesta, fashion fair, exhibition, music, and seminar.
