The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has inaugurated 170 new 500 KVA transformers for the three franchise areas of Katsina, Kano and Jigawa states of the company.
Inaugurating the transformers and other operational vehicles, including  buses, Gulf cars, ambulances and other facilities, the managing director of the company, Dr Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna said they are partnering with Shell Foundation to invest $2 billion in the company.
He said the investment of the Shell Foundation is aimed at boosting power supply of the company and make their customers enjoy uninterrupted power supply within the three franchise areas of the company including Niger Republic.
Dr. Gwamna noted that the objectives of the company are three which include improving their revenue generation, customer centric, good working environment and ensuring harmonious working relationship.
The managing director said the company inherited a dilapidated network power supply, which required huge investment, and over the last five years they have invested billions of naira for the generation of power.
He expressed worry that despite their huge investments, customers have failed to reciprocate the gesture by paying for energy supplied, which has affected the financial capability of the company.
He noted that the complaint over ‘crazy billings’ on customers would soon be a thing of the past as Meter Asset Company has taken over the responsibility of ensuring that every household has a meter.
He explained that in the next few weeks they would launch the selling of meters in their franchise areas of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa and urged anybody willing to have one to pay upfront in their offices across the states.
The MD added that with the way they are going KEDCO would soon become one of the best distribution companies in the country and commended the staff for their diligence.
